From its inception, the Fairfax Network’s Meet the Author series has served to promote literacy, and an interest in reading and writing, by giving students direct access to authors who share their personal stories, offer their writing tips, and encourage students to “keep reading, keep writing, keep dreaming.”

During the half-hour interactive program, authors describe their approach to the writing process, talk about character development, and sometimes share a sneak peek at their books not yet published.  During live programs, students call in with questions, inspiring lively and impromptu responses from the authors.

The connection established between authors and students brings the process of reading and writing to life.  As a result, students are motivated to read new books, write their own stories, practice the art of illustration, and find and establish their places in a reading and writing world.

Colonial Williamsburg’s classroom materials and programs are developed by teachers, museum professionals, and historians. Electronic Field Trips are designed to meet grades 4–8 state standards in social studies, language arts, arts education, and library/technology literacy, and science (when applicable). These materials and additional Colonial Williamsburg classroom resources are also correlated to National Standards in History Education, National Standards for Civics and Government, and 21st-Century Skills.

Educational Connections

Among explore's founding principles are “Share What You Know” and “Never Stop Learning.” The films profile issues facing the environment, education, human rights, public health, philosophy, animal welfare, spirituality, and disabilities.

The lesson plans accompanying explore’s films are written for use in the K – 12 classroom and are connected to grade level national standards. Background information about the non-profit organizations is provided along with questions for guided discussion about the films. The questions are intended for students to connect to the people and issues profiled by exploring and developing their own viewpoints and opinions.

Press Conference - No Soda Challenge

AISD students are giving up sugary soft drinks in a new initiative to combat obesity and push for healthier lifestyles.

Last Thursday morning the Austin Independent School District, Dell Children's Medical Center and community groups announced the no-soda challenge at Perez Elementary in Southeast Austin.

How and where to find AISD-TV, Channel 22

AISD-TV originates from district facilities and transmits the signals to Time-Warner Cable, Grande Communications, AT&T U-verse and Livestream Content Delivery Network for Internet distribution.

On the Time-Warner cable system AISD-TV is available on channel 22. In order to see the channel you will need either a modern digital TV set or the Time-Warner cable set top box. With a digital TV set, you will need to set up or scan the TV channels. The actual channel is 10.22. Some TV sets may scan this at another channel such as 10.7. With the Time-Warner set top box the channel is mapped within their system to channel 22. The channel is available on this system in standard definition (SD) only.

On the Grande Communications cable system AISD-TV is available on channel 22. It is currently available only on their analog part of the system and can be viewed on channel 22 using older analog TV sets, newer digital TV sets and with or without Grande Communications set top box. The channel is available on this system in standard definition (SD) only.

On the AT&T U-verse system AISD-TV is available on channel 99. Channel 99 contains a listing of menus. Scroll through the menu for Austin ISD. To view U-verse you will be required to use the AT&T set top box. The channel is available on this system in Windows Media displayed to the TV only.

On the web, AISD-TV is available at aisdtv.blogspot.com. Here you can find the full time stream of AISD-TV and the collection of on–demand shows of most all AISD-TV productions. The stream is Web High Definition (HD), but is also adjustable for Internet bandwidth availability. This same stream is also available on the school district’s main website at: austinisd.org/board-webcasts. The site currently is intended for viewer’s access to live board meetings and does so by featuring AISD-TV full time stream.

For teachers, students and staff, within school district facilities, in addition to some of the above, there is access to AISD-TV via the school district’s MediaCAST system web application. It is located at aisdcontent.austinisd.org . Currently it is best viewed in Internet Explorer and most versions of Safari. From the home page in MediaCAST go to the Digital TV tab and select AISD HD. Your may need to download Microsoft Silverlight in order to view the Windows Media stream. This is a lower resolution Web HD stream.
