Austin ISD Students Unveil Tejano Monument

More than 100 fourth and fifth grade students from Brentwood, Dawson, Galindo and Wooten elementary schools made history as they join the Tejano Monument Inc., the Mexican American Cultural Center and the University of Texas at Austin to unveil the Tejano Monument.
The series of statues by Armando Hinojosa commemorates the contributions made by Texans of Spanish and Mexican descent (Tejanos) between 1500 and 2010.
The AISD students and teachers participated in a curriculum project focused on Tejano history with the University of Texas at Austin. Six AISD fourth-grade teachers, who are current and former students of the College of Education's Bilingual Education program, are developing supplementary curricular materials on Tejano history. The curriculum will be available to fourth-grade teachers throughout Texas.
In addition to the monument unveiling, the Reagan High School New Orleans Funk Band and the Crockett High School Mariachi joined other AISD students in the Nosotros Los Tejanos Parade.
