The Austin Independent School District hosted a town hall meeting to discuss single-sex schools on Saturday, July 28 at Lyndon B. Johnson Early College High School auditorium.
AISD is considering combining the attendance areas at the James E. Pearce College Preparatory Academy and Gus Garcia Middle School to facilitate the design of two, single-sex middle schools. The design is one of the district’s preliminary, potential 2013-14 Annual Academic and Facility Recommendations. Trustee Cheryl Bradley and AISD staff members led a panel discussion and question and answer session about single-sex schools at these campuses and such issues as academic performance, learning styles and student interests.
Male students would attend one campus and female students would attend the other campus. The district would offer transfer options to parents who choose not to enroll their children in a single-sex school.
