VEX Sack Attack: This is one of 4 Texas Regional World Qualifying Regional Events.  48 teams participated in a fast paced and non-stop day where they battled against each other with robots constructed from the VEX Robotics Design System. Tournament winners qualify for the World Championship at Anaheim, CA in April 2013, to go against teams from Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States of America.  AISD's Anderson High School and McCallum High Schools participated.  Anderson High School's ausTIN CANs team were deemed the Excellence Award, Programming Skills Winner and Robot Skills Winner. The ausTIN CANs will be joining, previously qualified, McCallum High School in the 2013 VEX Robotics High School World Championship Competition.

Role Model Day: Blackshear Elementary students learn the ins and outs of potential careers during the 15th annual Role Model Day.   This is an educational, community engaged event designed to introduce students to career options and to make real-world connections with what they are learning in the classroom and its importance to their futures.  Community leaders, including Austin ISD Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen, Austin City Council members, firefighters, lawyers, bankers, business owners, police officers, and park rangers, among others, discuss their careers and educational background with students, sharing why they chose to pursue their current profession and what the day-to-day duties involve.

Profile of Kristen Marstaller, Instructional Coordinator of AISD Fine Arts Department:  Kristen describes her extensive experience with AISD including her service as an Elementary Teacher and Instructional Coordinator of AISD Fine Arts Department.  Kristen also highlights this years annual AISD Student Art Show.

Bailey Middle School students perform at Inauguration Festival: Bailey Middle School's wind ensemble represented AISD at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration Festival competition.  Worldstrides Heritage Performance Programs invited the Bailey wind ensemble to participate in its Presidential Inauguration Festival activities in and around Washington, D.C., which coincide with the festivities leading up to the inauguration of President Barack Obama.  Bailey's 61-student ensemble, which was one of three Texas schools invited to compete during the festival, performed three songs: "Semper Fidelis March" by John Philip Sousa, "Sheltering Sky" by John Mackey and "Summer Dances" by Brian Balmages. Following the performance at Annapolis Area Christian School's Kerr Center for the Arts, the students visited historic sites in Washington, D.C., and attended the presidential inauguration.

Great News Highlights: the naming of the new north central elementary school in honor of Dr. Janis Guerrero-Thompson, Lanier High School Senior Andrey Diaz won the gold at the UIL State Wrestling Championship, the AISD Board of Trustees' recognition of 2013 National Merit Scholars, National Hispanic Scholars and National Achievement Scholars and Reagan High School's girls' and boys' soccer teams successful seasons.
