National Teen Dating
Violence Awareness & Prevention Month- The Teen Justice Initiative offers
support and services to AISD teens to end dating violence and promote healthy
relationships. Learn how the non-profit
organizations Texas Advocacy Project, Safe Place and Changing Lives Youth
Theatre Ensemble promoted February as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness
and Prevention month.
Tết Celebration- Tết, also known as the
Vietnamese New Year, is an annual celebration held at Summitt
Elementary. Students from the Vietnamese Dual
Language Program performed a variety of acts, including a lion & dragon
dance. See how the students celebrated
and ushered in 2014 as the Year of the Horse.
Profile: Erick Posadas-International High
School Teacher Erick Posadas helps prepare English Language Learners become successful in
AISD high schools and beyond. Last year,
his first year of teaching, Mr. Posadas was recognized as at Teacher of
Promise. He helps his students with
English reading and writing skills in his World Geography and AP Art History
classes. Mr. Posadas also inspires his
students to succeed academically in high school and encourages them to peruse
post-secondary education.
Museum
in the Classroom- Maplewood Elementary’s gym was recently transformed into a
Natural History Museum. Dinosaur George
set up fossils and activities for elementary students to enjoy their own museum
for a day. The Texas Parent Teacher
Association awarded the school with a visit from Dinosaur George’s Museum in
the Classroom for increasing the school’s PTA participation.
TEDxYouth@Austin- AISD partnered with TEDxYouth to
support the upcoming TEDxYouth@Austin Second Annual Conference.
TEDxYouth@Austin, an event connected with TED Talks, is a completely
student-led event that invites speakers from all over the US to talk about
ideas worth spreading. This year’s theme, Re: Solve, focuses on taking action,
making changes physically occur, the process of repeating tasks again and
again, and the journey of solving problems and overcoming challenges.
Great News Highlights:
Lamar
Middle School: Jazz Factory & Winter Guard-
The Lamar Middle School Jazz Factory was a recipient of the National Wind Band
Honors, Mark of Excellence award presented by the Foundation for Music
Education. The school also had AISD's first Middle School Winter Guard, which
debuted last school year, winning 3 regional competitions and placing 2nd
in the TCGC State Championships.
New
AISD Athletic Director- Austin ISD's Board of Trustees
approved the appointment of Leal Anderson as the district's new athletics
director. As athletics director, Mr.
Anderson will oversee AISD's sports programs, the district's participation in
Special Olympics and sports facilities.
Marathon Kids 2014 Finisher Medal
Celebration- Approximately 39,000 AISD elementary students
participated in Marathon Kids this year.
Recently, they took their official 'last lap' of the 26.2 Mile Challenge
at the Finisher Medal Celebration.
Blackshear Elementary Literacy Night-
Blackshear Elementary and the George Washington Carver branch of the Austin Public Library hosted Family Literacy Night. Literacy-related activities, involving new
and classic children's books, took place throughout the library for students
and parents.
The new
episode is featured on AISD-TV (Channel 22 on Time Warner and Grande Systems
and on the channel 99 menu system on U-verse.
