Any Given Child: The Austin Independent School District, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the City of Austin and MINDPOP are coming together to launch a city-wide vision for creative learning in Austin. Brentwood Elementary teacher Sloan McLain and her second grade students demonstrate how they integrate the arts into their classroom.
All-City Choral Festival: AISD Elementary, Middle School and High School Choir students combined to perform in the 2012 All-City Choral Festival. Deb Keenan, a teacher at Baranoff Elementary School, and Marlee Goodman, an Anderson High School Freshman, describe what being involved in the festival means to them.
Anita Uphaus Dedication: The Austin Independent School District and the community celebrate the dedication of the Anita Uphaus Early Childhood Center. The center is the eighth new school and sixth new elementary funded by the 2008 Bond Program. The center is named after Anita Uphaus, who led early childhood educational programs at AISD for more than 30 years.
Profile of Cathryne McNamara, Humanities Award Recipient: Anderson High School's Cathryne McNamara teaches psychology and Theory of Knowledge courses at the International Baccalaureate level. Humanities Texas has honored her with its prestigious Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities award, which recognizes exemplary K-12 language arts, foreign language, history and social studies teachers with expansive knowledge of the humanities subjects they teach. McNamara is the only teacher in Central Texas to be honored by the statewide organization.
Frozen Music: The Texas Society of Architects invited AISD students to create an original composition to be performed at the annual state conference, this year held in Austin. The compositions, "Frozen Music", are short student-composed musical works inspired by the architectural process. The submissions were selected by a committee and three AISD high school students were awarded college scholarships in addition to performing their compositions at the conference.
"Great News" will briefly cover: Baldwin Elementary's vocabulary parade, the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam recently award of a $9,500 grant to the Ann Richards School for Young Women leaders to create a pressurized produce preserver that runs on sustainable renewable energy and Austin ISD public hearings regarding the potential scope of work for a May 2013 Bond Program. The meetings are part of AISD’s ongoing effort to gather input and feedback from families and community members about the potential bond.
